Budgets are essential to planning, there's no way around'em.  Here are five (5) tips for event budget maintenance.

  • Set A Comfortable Budget: Add about 5-20% as a cushion.
  • Create A Spreadsheet: Everything has a cost and it will cost you everything if every dollar spent is not tracked.
  • Determine What's Important: Invest in what will make you the happiest at the end of the day.
  • Plan Early: Waiting until the last minute will be costly.  Don't fail to plan detail of your event.
  •  Become DIY Savvy: Zero to no budget = DIY.  If your not crafty check out my video here for easy ideas from the #dollartree.

Styling weddings & events are my favorite part of the planing process.  Here are five (5) strategies for styling your event like a true boss:

  • Get it out of Your Head: Decide what colors, theme and vision you want and write it down.  If it's in your head and not on paper  you'll quickly begin to get frustrated with the millions of ways to decorate.
  • Get Inspired: Once you know EXACTLY how you envision your big day, look for inspiration.  I suggest creating a vision board.  If you're unsure of where to start, my Pinterest page has tons of ideas.
  • Go With The Flow: Flow is so important!  Your event should have the same look and feel of your vision board; if it doesn't it will be 100% obvious.
  • Keep the Receipts: Begin purchasing items, with the end goal in mind; bring your vision board with you everywhere you go.  Find matching decor items, linens, napkins, chargers, themed items, tableware, etc, that go along with your concept.  Definitely try patterns and textures.  If it doesn't speak to your design..WALK AWAY.  Keep receipts for budget purposes or should need to do a return in the future.
  • Tablescape Tea: Finally, set up a faux guest table ahead of time.  Order samples from your vendors when possible, sometimes things look much different on line and it's better to know if colors match or if you'll like the quality of the good your purchasing.  Then, ask those you trust to give you the real tea on the look.  You don't want any regrets the day of.

COVID19 has everyone making unexpected changes.  You want to host your event and cancelling is not an option. If your stressing and not sure how to plan an event virtually. Here's a planning checklist to help you host an awesome event that everyone will love.

  • Pick A Collaboration Space: My top suggestions for the most dependable virtual and free chat rooms are: Zoom (up to 40 minutes), Goggle Hangouts (10 guests), Goggle Duo (8 guests), Facebook Messenger (50 guests), What's App (4 guests), Facetime (32 guests), Skype (10 guests) and HouseParty (8 guests).
  • Guest Who’s Coming To Dinner: Make the guest list. If applicable send out save the dates or reminders. Let your guests know if the date has changed or if the event has been postponed.
  • Pick A Theme: color combos, graduation, gender reveals, baby showers, birthday parties or a movie night.
  • Invitations: I love, love, love and highly recommend #Canva, #Evite or #Punchbowl. Setup is quick, easy and free. Evite and punchbowls have RSVP features to help keep you organized. Choose an invitation that matches your theme. Invites should be sent at least 2-4 weeks in advance. Check out my Cavna design https://pint.it/6O1bmWm  for a 40th birthday party I did last year, it was a breeze to text the final invite to guests.
  • Decorating Details: This is a great opportunity to try a beautiful backdrop. The options are endless. Check out my entryway backdrop for starters: https://pin.it/5y8Lype.  Don't forget to decorate the outside of your home with matching theme messages.
  • Party Supplies: Including guests, friends and family is a great way to keep the momentum going. I suggest personalizing party supplies when possible; personal decor always makes an event more sentimental.
  • Agenda: Create a virtual agenda and timeline, I have found that guests like to know exactly what’s going on and need direction as to next steps.
  • Virtual Videos: Create a video or powerpoint presentation.  Most collaboration platforms allow for easy screen sharing.  Be sure to designate or hire someone to assist with taking pictures and video creation.
  • Games: Printables are free and a great tool when you need a game such as for a baby shower; Pinterest has tons of ideas. These could also be sent in advance with guest party supplies.
  • Go Out With A BangEnding the event with a car celebration bringing attention to the guest of honor is a sure way to make the event extra special.  Check out this was executed at:  https://www.instagram.com/tv/CAXpgOFj0mJ/?igshid=k2r3ircmvv9o4.  Make sure to stream it on Facebook or Instagram live.
  • Show Your Appreciation: Don't forget to say thank you.  Create a personal handmade gift or a quick YouTube video is a fresh and new way to say thanks.

Have you ever wondered where the words couture, glam and lux originated?  Have you considered what these styles really look like?  A true understanding of what each of these terms mean is the "piece de resistance" to your decor success.  Read further as I breakdown these frequently used styling terms.

Chic: Dictonary.com defines chic as: attractive and fashionable; stylish and elegant,  a casual and understated style, as in dress or décor, a style that expresses a specified trendy lifestyle or activity.  Noted from the 1600's chic is derived from the old French term "chicanery."  Chic has also been linked to German descent meaning "shick," "skill or tact."   A few examples are:

Couture: Most known in the fashion industry as "haute couture" - merriam-webster.com states that couture is the business of designing, making and selling fashionable custom-made clothing; relating to or being high-end custom-made fashion.  It is of French origin: meaning sewing/dressmaking.  Couture also has a Latin connotation meaning "consuere" or to stitch together.  Great examples are:

  • Glam: The Urban dictionary defines this term as mostly sparkley and pretty stuff.  The etiomology dictionary states that the root word "glamour" is Scottish, for "magic and enchantment."  First recorded in 1840 glamour is also said to be an alteration of the English meaning "magical beauty and alluring charm."   The term is also noted to mean a quality of attractiveness more specifically associated with Hollywood, high-fashion.  Celebrities began using the term in 1939.  Other forms of glam are: glammed, glamming and glams.  Click here for some great ideas:

Luxe: Also known as lux, is the shortened version of  luxury.  Similarly related to the term "sumptuous" meaning extremely comfortable living or surroundings.  Luxury is from both Middle English, Old French and Latin.  The American Heritage® dictionary  states that sumptuous also means extremely costly, rich or magnificent.  Click to see this style:

{Merriam-Webster; American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language via thefreedictionary.com}.

Over-The-Top: Generally speaking over-the-top is purposely meant to be extremely excessively, flamboyant or outrageous; to go beyond what is expected, usual, normal, or appropriate, exaggerated; outlandish.  Here are some examples:

(Merriam-Webster & Urban Dictionaries).

Whatever style you choose make it personal and your very own. Your home or event can be beautiful.  Check out my glammed DIY design using dollar tree items: https://pin.it/2hNjdgF it's proof that you can have the event of your dreams even on a #brokeass budget.
